Virginia Azerbaijan House Commemorates Khojaly Genocide with Film Screening and Photo Exhibition
Fairfax, VA – February 23, 2025 – The Virginia Azerbaijan House organized a solemn event in commemoration of the Khojaly Genocide, one of the most tragic atrocities of modern history. The program, held at Cinema Arts Theatres in Fairfax, VA, brought together diplomatic representatives, community leaders, and members of both the Azerbaijani and Turkish diasporas to honor the innocent lives lost on February 26, 1992, to raise awareness for justice, and to ensure the truth is never forgotten.
As part of a five-day Khojaly Week, printed materials highlighting the facts of the genocide and inviting the public to the commemoration were distributed. During the event, a photo exhibition portraying the real scenes of the Khojaly tragedy was displayed throughout the day, leaving participants deeply moved by the painful images of the atrocities committed against innocent civilians.
Attendees also watched two powerful films – “Born in January 20” and “Son” (Oğul) – which not only depicted the tragedies endured by the Azerbaijani people but also reflected their resilience and pursuit of justice.
This significant commemoration was attended by His Excellency Khazar Ibrahim, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the United States, and an advisor from the Embassy of Türkiye, symbolizing the unity of the Turkic world and their shared commitment to defending human rights.
Representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora and the Turkish community in the U.S. also joined to honor the memory of Khojaly victims and to demonstrate solidarity. A core purpose of the event was to raise international awareness of the tragedy and to reaffirm the call to ensure such atrocities never happen again.
The Virginia Azerbaijan House expresses its heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in and supported this important commemoration. It should be noted that on February 26, with the sponsorship of Baku Delicious Café and the organization of Azerbaijan House, a memorial meal and distribution of informational materials will be held in remembrance of the genocide victims.
